Anatomy of a Market Correction…What I’m Doing Now!

To recognize something happening, not in hindsight, but as it is occurring is very hard to do…

A funny feeling came over me a week or so ago as the market inched its way down.  Was this “sell in May” and go away or something else?  I have decided that the market variables right now demand caution and defensiveness.  For me, that means accumulating all the cash I can and having it ready in case the market really erodes fast and we go from a correction to an outright crash.

What are near-term issues facing the

Refinancing My Home Mortgage

It’s Refinancing Time!

Refinancing is something I really had not pursued yet.  With a low interest mortgage that is 30 year fixed already, I just didn’t think I would see rates go low enough for me to consider refinancing.  Well, I just saw 30 year fixed rate mortgages for as low as 3.50%.  That’s unbelievable!  It’s a once in a lifetime event and one that must be taken advantage.  Yesterday, I called my old loan broker that did nearly all of my homes and all of my rental properties I used to have.  He, of

Be Thankful…Our Parents Were Wealthy With Much Less!

I recently had one of those nice, perspective-gaining moments.  I was visiting my parents and my old man asked me to look over his retirement info and finances and tell me what I thought.  For anyone who’s experienced this with their parents, it’s very surreal.  Imagine, the people who taught you pretty much everything you know are now asking you if you think they made good choices with their money and what things they should consider in the future to make it last.  Honestly, I was touched!

What Does It Take To Retire Early?

My taste in personal finance evolves like anything else.  I would say right now, I’m most interested in the practical application of wealth accumulation theories.  Mind you, there’s nothing wrong with, “I got a new credit card for the reward points or How I’m living frugally to get out of debt”.  That’s all good stuff, but I find myself reading the handful of PF bloggers who, to put it bluntly…HAVE ALREADY MADE IT!

They are financially independent.  They have multiple streams of income.  They are

The “Busy” Weekly Roundup 5-5-2012 (Sell In May Edition)

As of this writing, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq markets have logged their worst weeks of 2012.  Specifically:

Dow Jones Industrial Average down 168.32 (-1.27%) to 13,038.27 S&P 500 down 22.47 (-1.61%) to 1,369.10 Nasdaq Composite Index down 67.96 (-2.25%) to 2,956.34

U.S. stocks fell sharply after the April jobs report came in well below forecasts.  We are now into May and the economy again looks shaky.  This all brings the importance of capital preservation and making smart moves with your money into play.  The stock market is volatile and simply cannot be your sole means of

Are Your Finances Properly Insulated?

This question popped into my head today as I was going through my usual routine of eating dinner with my family (while also updating my financial excel spreadsheet).  I was looking over all the “numbers”…spotting trends and, in my own mind, making better decisions.

One of the reasons I write about personal finance is that I like to constantly stimulate my thinking about my overall strategy.  I love managing money and I feel good when I’ve reviewed my spreadsheets and said to myself, “No surprises.”  What happens

Ready for P2P Investing (Just one big problem!)

P2P Lending has been on my list of new investments I’ve wanted to explore for awhile now.  I’ve got some cash and I’d like to diversify beyond stocks, bonds, REITs, etc.  This weekend I started doing serious research with the anticipation of opening and account to begin funding notes.  Let me share a little bit of what I learned and then tell you my big problem.

What is P2P Lending?

Per Wikipedia, P2P Lending is a certain breed of financial transaction (primarily lending and borrowing, though other more complicated transactions can be facilitated) which occurs directly between individuals
